The palera1n team took use of the New Year’s vacation to reveal exciting plans for the year 2023 about palera1n, the jailbreak tool for A9-A11 chip-equipped phones running iOS or iPadOS 15.0-16.x that is based on the checkm8 bootrom vulnerability.

Team member “nebula#5513” posted on the official palera1n Discord server that the group will be working on making palera1n a rootless jailbreak and highlighted the advantages this would have for users.

As enthusiasts of jailbreaking, we all understand what a rootless jailbreak is and how it differs from more conventional jailbreaks. The primary distinction between them is that a rootless jailbreak does not grant the user read and write access to the operating system or root disk, although the majority of jailbreak tweaks and add-ons may be modified to work in this environment. Regular jailbreakers shouldn’t experience noticeable user-experience differences.

According to the discord post, The rootless dynamics would resolve problems with the ramdisk and the loader app not showing up on the home screen that many users had with the previous jailbreak.

Another user-friendly benefit of Palera1n going rootless, is that jailbreaking a smartphone only takes 20 seconds from entering DFU mode to completion. Isn’t this wonderful news?

The ability to become rootless and recompile the Palera1n jailbreak in Python is another indication that Windows-based ports are facilitating this process. Although a Windows version is not presently being developed, the palerain team asserts that it could do so in the future. There appear to be no time estimates.

It’s important to note that not all jailbreak tweaks currently support rootless dynamics; however, given that Apple’s Signed System Volume (SSV) security mitigations seem to indicate that this is the direction jailbreaking will take, it makes sense that more tweak creators are adding support for rootless dynamics.

The only non-rootless jailbreak for iOS & iPadOS 15 at the moment is palera1n. It is worth mentioning that the Odyssey team’s unreleased Cheyote jailbreak for iOS & iPadOS 15.0–15.1.1 should be rootless, and the developer-exclusive XinaA15 jailbreak for A12–A15 chip-equipped iOS and iPadOS phones 15.0–15.1.1 is also rootless.

Palera1n considers all of this and provides the public with access to the remaining jailbreaks, which helps developers and builds on the user-friendly advantages noted above on the Discord channel.

It will be interesting to see what happens to the Palerain jailbreak after the switch to rootless. A no-root jailbreak is allegedly easier to remove from a device than a no-root jailbreak, potentially lowering the danger to the end-user while debugging.

Feel free to share your thoughts on Palera1n switching to rootless. Your opinions are welcome in our comment area.
