Connecting High Power Devices with Son Off Basic

SonOff Basic with Contactor - thetechpapa.com

Last Updated on 2 years by admin

In our previous Home Automation guide, we showed step by step details on connecting Son Off Basic with devices that take less than 10A (2200W). Also, we promised to share a guide on how to connect more powerful devices with Son Off Basic, and this guide will walk you through.

The device used to connect high powered devices with son off is called a contactor

A contactor is an electrically-controlled switch used for switching an electrical power circuit/s. Contactors are found in different voltages to meet different country standards such as 110V, 220V. Also, the contactor freely available from 25A – 100A Single Phase / Three Phase. Even higher capacities are available in well-known brands.

Unlike general-purpose relays, contactors designed to directly connect with high-current load devices. Relays tend to be of lower capacity and usually designed for both normally closed and normally open applications. Devices switching more than 15 amperes or in circuits rated more than a few kilowatts are commonly called contactors. Apart from optional auxiliary low-current contacts, contactors almost exclusively fitted with normally open contacts. Unlike relays, contactors are designed with features to control and suppress the arc produced when interrupting heavy motor currents.

Normally Open / Normally Closed Relay / Contactor

Advantages of using Contactor

  1. Contactor permits installation of power contacts close to motor/high powered devices, whereas the actuating control device. Example, a push-button switch could be located away from the motor in a position most convenient to the operator.
  2. Also, Magnetic control/ Contactor provides safety to the operator as a remote operation described above minimizes the danger to the operator of coming into accidental contact with live parts or being exposed to power arc and flashes at the main connections.
  3. The most important advantage of magnetic control is the elimination of dependence on operators’ skill for control of motor/high powered device performance. Current and torque peaks could be limited, thus resulting in less wear and less maintenance.
  4. With the demand for more products in the industry, it became necessary to atomize the machinery to meet the challenge. Therefore, today, in our industrial plants, most of the machines are automatic. The Contactor plays the key role in industrial automation as well.

Purchase Links for Contactors

  • When purchasing make sure to check the voltage that suits your country
  • For better durability, try to choose a Contactor that Supports more Current or Amperage than required.
  • Check the Contactor status Normal Open or Normal Closed. In most situations, we use Normal Open Contactors however this can change depending on your requirement.

Ideas to support your creation

Below listed images will give you a better idea on how to place the items and how to safely insulate the wires. Following the same is not compulsory however always give more attention to do safe wiring.

Few Ideas where you can use this smart switch

  • Air Conditioner / Heater – It will help you remotely cool / heat your home so that the by the time you reach home you don’t need to run around switching on the AC/ Heater.
  • Coffee’ Maker.
  • Water Pump – Also, if you have a drip irrigation system this would help you switch on-off the pump at desired times. We will share a more on this in the future.
  • Electric Car Charger – Furthermore, if you think overnight charging is not suitable for the batteries you can use this to switch off the charger at a given time

Congrats..! You have successfully completed your 3rd Smart Home Project. Furthermore, the featured image that displays on top of the page is used to control an Air Conditioner. Also, it has been continuously working for more than 3 months. Comment us if need further guidance or tech support. Also, keep us updated with your successful creations.
