Safety Tips for your DIY Solar projects

Safety First

Whenever you do something, you should think about safety. It is even the same with electricity.

Here are some solar safety tips.

What are the dangers that could occur while using off-grid?

  • Short connection of Battery – A battery is something that stores energy. In normal use, we don’t exceed the current level mentioned in the battery, but incidentally, if the positive terminal touch with the negative terminal, the battery can provide large current. This generates heat and could catch fire.
  • Overcharging of Battery – If a charger controller is not used or if the charging controller is not working correctly. The battery may charge more than it needs. If it does, it’s not good for the battery and could cause serious issues. The lead and acid batteries are made using hydrogen and oxygen. If these two gases combine, a spark can explode. Lithium-ion batteries can overheat and burn.
  • The lithium-ion battery can burn, burn, and burn. Be incredibly careful with lithium batteries. It can burn for no reason.
  • If the voltage at the battery bank or the solar panel is over fifty volts, a direct connection to the skin could cause electric shock.
  • If you use an inverter to convert DC voltage into AC this also could cause electric shock.

Safety tips to protect yourself & your loved ones.

  1. Install fuse/ breaker for all required devices. Especially for the battery output. Simple fuse is the best protection in a short circuit.
  2. Turn off the full system power when you are working closely with the system.
  3. Insulate / Cover the battery terminal. If the terminal is open, it might be a little risky.
  4. Select the best wire to suit the system. Excessive currents will overheat and weaken the insulation which could eventually be causing a short circuit.
  5. Use the fuse according to the current in a wire
  6. Those who use lithium-ion have a fire extinguisher, if affordable it is advisable for everyone.
  7. Always use safely glows and insulated tools
