palera1n gets semi-tethered support on iOS 15.0-15.3.1

Last Updated on 2 years by admin

On Monday, an update to the checkra1n jailbreak added semi-untethered support for devices running iOS & iPadOS 15.0-15.3.1. The palera1n jailbreak is designed for developers, also uses the venerable checkm8 hardware-based bootrom exploit. The below screenshot is from the official @palera1n Twitter channel.

new about palera1n update

Palera1n was previously only a tethered jailbreak. It required users to use a computer to restart their jailbroken device each time it shut down. Now that it is semi-untethered, users can at least boot into a non-jailbroken state without a computer before re-jailbreaking their device.

We stress once more that palera1n is a developer-only jailbreak. According to palera1n developer Mineek shared in a Discord post yesterday (Monday the 7th Nov 2022) it is crucial given that this new semi-untethered support is experimental by nature and takes up to 10 GB of storage space. This is due to the fact that it makes a partition that contains a fake rootFS that was copied from the real system partition.

Due to the storage space needed for this workaround, the new semi-untethered feature is not compatible with devices that only have 16 GB of internal storage. Those devices will stay connected as tethered. Users would apparently need to use the rootFS restore function before changing the jailbreak command the next time. Further by following the palera1n discord you can gather more information.

It’s important to note that palera1n jailbreak only works with iOS and iPadOS versions 15.0 to 15.3.1, so the semi-untethered support is meant to complement those versions. You can find palera1n seme-untethered usage instructions available on github and on the Twitter account as well.
