Choose the right Inverter for your DIY Solar Project

Last Updated on 2 years by admin

Choosing the right inverter for the solar project is one of the key things. Therefore, I thought of sharing my findings. Hope it will help you all with your projects.

When we connect electrical equipment to the grid, we think only of the current that can go through the wire. Like 5 amps and 15 amps. But we should think beyond that point when connecting equipment to inverters. That is because unlike the Grid Power Inverter has a fixed capacity.

Watts in the Inverter

Choose the right inverter for solar panels is all about calculating the wattage of your devices. Some equipment has a high starting wattage but running wattage is ½ of it or even less. Therefore, you need to consider these facts during the calculating.

To support the high starting wattage some inverters are designed with a peak wattage and continue running wattage. If you are having a tight budget, then these inverters can help your needs.

However, it is always advisable to choose an inverter with extra capacity. It will extend the life of the inverter and leave you some space for future upgrading.

Modified Sine Wave & Pure Sine Wave

Another key point during choosing the right Inverter is the waveform of the inverter.

In simple terms if you are using motors, drill machines, fridges then you need to choose a pure sine wave inverter as it is like the waveform of the grid power.

If you are planning to connect Computers/ Laptops/ TV’s, then you can use a modified sine wave inverter. Compared to pure sine inverters the modified sine wave inverters are less expensive.

Reasons that an inverter could get damaged.

  • If the inverter takes more than the wattage, the inverter can be damaged.
  • Using equipment that is not compatible with the inverter can damage the device

Is it practical to use all types of equipment with an inverter?

Choosing the right inverter does not limit to the key facts like matching the wattage and wave form. It should also be practical and affordable.

Therefore, it may not be practical to use a water geyser, high-capacity (high BTU/non inverter) air conditioner, or freezers with a defrosting.

Though in theory the above items are compatible with inverters. In practical life higher wattage inverters are high priced. Also, you need high-capacity batteries to match the load. Therefore, connecting these types of devices isn’t advisable.
