Huawei the Chinese smartphone manufacturer bid’s to challenge Google Maps with their mapping service Map Kit. It can be a potential alternative to Google Maps. President of cloud services Zhang Pingan at Huawei’s consumer business group stated “China Daily” the state-run newspaper that new map offers “a highly sophisticated navigation system.” Software developers can make use of the Map Kit to make new developments. However, it is not an app for consumers.
Map Kit will offer street navigation, real-time traffic conditions and recognition of lane change attracting the developers to build applications based on Huawei’s challenging mapping technology. Yandex and the US-based travel website Booking Holdings are joining hands with Huawei among the companies to try out the Map. The map will be available in multiple countries and support 40 languages.
Web research makes us believe Map Kit was launched to strong-arm the app development of the recently launched Huawei’s HarmonyOS. It is also one step to reduce the reliance on Android OS developed by Google. Right now this isn’t looking to be some attempt from Huawei to overthrow Google Maps. However, it seems to be a substitute tool in its range, which can be a plan B option.
As we stated previously, HarmonyOS / HongMeng OS can adapt easily to any device starting from smart speakers to wearables. Therefore, the Map Kit will soon benefit many geeky gadgets.
