This week, iOS 16.1 was made available to the general public and included support for Live Activities in third-party apps. But it appears that Live Activities integration for a few sports games via Apple’s built-in TV app has been delayed until iOS 16.2.
Live Activities integration in the TV app was disabled halfway through the iOS 16.1 beta testing period, but it has now been enabled in the first beta of iOS 16.2. Since iOS 16.2 is anticipated to go on sale in December, Apple should fulfill its promise to make the sports feature accessible to all users later this year.
The function enables iPhone users to quickly scan live sports scores on the Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island on their devices iPhone 14 Pro models. First beta of iOS 16.2 seeded to developers this yesterday (October 25th 2022)
For instance, a scoreboard showing the number of goals scored by each club during a Premier League match can be seen at the Dynamic Island. The Dynamic Island expands to show the time remaining and play-by-play action when long-pressed. Both the locked iPhone 14 Pro and all other iPhone models’ Lock Screens show the score.
To test the function, launch the TV app on an iPhone running the iOS 16.2 beta and tap the “Follow” button for a supported game. Apple claims that users in the US, Canada, Australia, the UK, Brazil, Mexico, Japan, and South Korea can access the feature for MLB games as well as NBA. Premier League games are accessible for users in the US and Canada. The feature will probably be made available to other sports leagues in the future.
Live Activities are currently available in some sports apps on iOS 16.1, including Sports Alerts.
