While using turn-by-turn directions, the iPhone announces the upcoming turns and alerts so that you are aware of them without looking at the screen Apple Maps or Google Maps.

In this short tutorial, we’ll show you how to disable the voice instructions if you don’t think they’re useful. We will also go over how to change the turn-by-turn directions’ volume in Google and Apple Maps.

Control the Apple Maps navigation sound

Activate or deactivate spoken directions

Activate or deactivate spoken directions
  • Tap the speaker button when you’re on the turn-by-turn navigation screen.
  • By tapping the muted speaker button, voice alerts for all directions can be turned off.
  • Alternatively, you can select to only receive audio announcements for critical driving alerts by tapping the speaker icon with an alert triangle.

Change the navigation volume as necessary (make it High or Low)

Previously, you could choose between No Voice, Low Volume, Normal Volume, and Loud Volume when you went to the iPhone Settings > Maps > Navigation & Guidance. Unfortunately, those useful options are no longer available on recent iOS versions. Therefore, you can now use the volume up and down buttons while using Apple Maps to adjust the volume of spoken directions.

Configure spoken directions as desired

1) Launch the Settings app, then select Maps.

2) Select Spoken Directions by swiping down. You can enable or disable the following options from here:

Spoken Directions
  • Directions Pause Spoken Audio – When Apple Maps on your iPhone speaks the directions, you can pause any playing content, including podcasts, audiobooks, music, and so on
  • Directions Wake Device – You can lock the iPhone screen during a long trip to conserve battery life or turn down the interior lighting while driving at night. In spite of this, Apple Maps keeps running the navigation even after the screen goes dark. Enabling the Directions Wake Device toggle will make sure that whenever you need to make a turn or do something else, the spoken directions will wake your iPhone’s screen for visual guidance
  • Directions on Radio – On supported vehicles, spoken directions can be heard on the car speaker system. If your car head does not support Apple Car Play there are alternatives which could support car play. Checkout our previous posts to get over car play issues and learn about the supported features

Customize Google Maps’ navigation sound alerts

Though the content is much focused on Apple Maps on iPhone, the same applies for Google Maps on Android phones. However, still I personaly believe Google Maps is the best gps app for iphone.

Turn on or off voice prompts for turn-by-turn maps

  • Tap the speaker icon on the Google Maps navigation screen
  • To silence all spoken direction commands while navigating, hit the speaker icon with a diagonal stroke
  • To receive only specific alerts via voice, you can tap the speaker icon with an exclamation point

Adjust the spoken navigation’s volume as preferred

Use the physical volume buttons on your phone to raise or lower the sound volume while using Google Maps’ turn-by-turn navigation.

In addition, you can select Settings by swiping up on the bottom card. Set the guidance volume to softer, normal, or louder from this point on. On the same screen, you can also modify other relevant settings, such as whether voice directions are played through the connected Bluetooth device.

Similar to the iPhone “Directions Wake Device” you can use the power button on Android phones to turn off the screen whenever needed, The navigation will run in background and alert you with all turn-by-turn voice prompts. You can enable the screen by pressing the power button or tapping on the display (in supported models).

Now You know how to modify the spoken directions in the iPhone’s maps app. You can configure Apple Maps or Google Maps to speak only the alerts or to completely silence depending on your need.

Furthermore, during COVID-19 apple announced that Apple tracks changes in travel behavior and if you think it is a privacy issue still there are other navigation options like TomTom Go which will just do the job. However, the features will be vastly different from Apple Maps and Google Maps.
