At the time Apple made announcements about the release of iOS 15 they never said upgrade was mandatory. Apple also released security updates for iOS 14 users so that they could continue using the OS. At least this was a satisfying option for the users who were happy with the features and performance in iOS 14.
Apple software updates were also offered with a choice of selection. Which enabled iPhone and iPad users to select updates for the current OS (iOS 14) while it displayed the upgrade to iOS 15 on a separate section just for the iOS lovers who wanted to benefit from new features.
There was no specific timeline for the iOS 14 to retire. But Apple told Ars “that it always intended the iOS 14 security update option to be temporary. Essentially, people could have a short grace period while Apple worked out the worst of the new operating system’s early bugs. But you would always eventually have to upgrade to stay patched.”
As to confirm the grace period of iOS 14 is ending, Apple stopped security patches. Which will eventually make everyone upgrade to iOS 15. This is widely explained on Dhinakg Github. Anyhow, other than guessing there is no information to confirm why Apple made this change.
Why Apple Stopped iOS 14 updates / Security Patches
After going through much content we have come up with two guesses which may have intended Apple to release iOS 14 updates.
- Apple might want everyone to upgrade to iOS 15 as it offers more features and security. Looking at the security content of iOS 15.2 we can understand Apple fixed many issues. It is debatable that the same fixes could be added to iOS 14 however there could be reasons that the fixes work well on the latest iOS. Which we never know.
- The other reason that we could think of as the reason for ending iOS 14 could be the low adoption rate. The upgrade rate to iOS 15 has dropped. iOS 14 was used by 81% of the compatible devices. However the upgrade to iOS 15 shows on around 72%. Which means a large number of Apple users still love using iOS 14. This could be another reason to stop updates for iOS 14.
If Apple was clear about the time frame from the beginning this situation could have been changed. Anyhow since the security updates are no longer available with iOS 14 users will gradually move to iOS 15. Let you know if you still love using iOS 14 and what really made you stick with it.
