Take Control of Apple Automatic App Updates – iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch

Last Updated on 3 years by admin

We’ve become accustomed to having an App for every task. An App even monitors the most peaceful period of the day (nap time). Apps are becoming increasingly integrated into our lives as we draw closer to modern technology. When a new OS is launched, each application receives an update. App developers also make updates to improve and stabilize their products. Apple, on the other hand, has given customers authority over Automatic App Updates for iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch.

Having control over iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch App Update means that we have the power to switch off or switch on the updates as we prefer. Both has its Pro’s and Con’s. Also, as users we need to know the actions we take could end up with positive/ negative results.

Switch OFF and Switch ON App Updates in iPhone / iPad

Switching between Automatic updates and Manual updates has been available since earlier versions of iOS. If you are a fan of using older versions here’s the steps to switch between Automatic and Manual app updates.

Switch Off/On auto App updates in iOS 12 and below iPhones and iPads

  1. Tap on Setting on iPhone / Apple iPad
  2. Tab on iTunes & App Store
  3. Tap the toggle switch to switch between auto updates on / off
    1. If the toggle switch is towards right and the color is green, auto updates are ON
    2. Having the toggle towards to left means auto app updates OFF

iOS 13 and onwards the option for enabling and disabling automatic app updates is bit easier. Let’s check out the steps.

  1. Look for Settings app in your iPhone / iPad and tap on it
  2. Swipe down and tap on App Store
  3. Select App Updates toggle switch and enable for Auto updates, disable to Off updates

In this section you have extra control over enabling and disabling below options

  • Apps automatic download
  • Auto downloads over Mobile Data and further set options like Always Allow, Always Ask or Ask if the download is over certain amount of megabytes
  • Offload Unused Apps (this option saves more space by removing unused apps. However, the saved data is kept safe)

Enable / Disable App updates in Apple Watch

Like iPhone and iPad, the option to enable and disable automatic app updates is available on Apple Watch as well. However, since there is no way to pull down and look for available updates sometimes the iWatch may not show available updates. Hope this is just a temporary thing which can be soon fixed with an apple watch software update.

Steps to on / off Automatic App updates in Apple Watch

  1. Access the Settings app using the wheel icon
  2. Just like in iPhone look for the App Store
  3. Enable or Disable Automatic Updates according to your choice of having auto app updates
Apple Watch Auto Updates

On the iPhone, iPad, and iWatch, you may enable or disable automatic app updates, giving you more control over your apps. That is only one method of gaining control. However, it is recommended that auto updates for Apps be enabled for improved speed and security. Moreover, updating watch Apps can fix / break apps as well as fix or create lags and freezing errors. If you run in to similar issues checkout for fixes.

Furthermore, there are additional options for controlling iOS and its functions. If you use OTA auto updates to install the Apple iPhone iOS 15 update, or if you are a beta tester, the Apple iOS 15 beta update might be updated automatically using the developer login. However, this isn’t the case for everyone. If you enjoy jailbreaking, you might opt to use an earlier version of iOS to take use of the capabilities. This is only feasible if you take command of your iPhone’s automated upgrades.

This is what you need to do if you want to enable or disable Apple iPhone iOS updates on your phone or iPad. Go to Settings > General > Software Updates > Automatic Updates. Now you can enable or disable updates using the toggle button for both below options.

  • Download iOS Updates
  • Install iOS Updates

I hope this post has given you some insight into how to manage iPhone applications and iOS upgrades. If you have any questions, please contact us through the comments area.
