The Mac Studio is a professional-level Apple Silicon Mac that offers high performance in a package that is roughly twice the size of a Mac mini. That is, which sits between the Mac mini and the Mac Pro in the Mac lineup, is a desktop Mac that is both smaller and faster than the two. The Mac Studio, aimed at professionals, promises high-level performance using Apple Silicon in a monitor-free desktop form.

It’s 7.7 inches wide and deep, and 3.7 inches tall, according to the manufacturer. This has a similar footprint to a Mac mini but is twice as tall. Check out the mac face and body images below

Apple uses the extra height to install a cooling system with double-sided blowers that push air out through over 4,000 perforations in the back. Apple claims that even when the Mac Studio is under heavy load, the cooling system will keep it quiet.

An SDXC slot is located on the front, along with two USB-C ports for the M1 Max and Thunderbolt 4 for the M1 Ultra. Four Thunderbolt 4 ports, as well as 10 Gigabit Ethernet, two USB-Type A, HDMI, and a headphone jack, are located on the back. There’s also Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0.

The M1 Max and M1 Ultra, as well as the included Media Engine for video encoding and decoding, make the Mac Studio appealing to creative professionals. Also, M1 Ultra version will have a 20-core CPU, a 64-core GPU, and a 32-core Neural Engine in its most powerful configuration.

M1 Max can be ordered with up to 64GB of Universal Memory, while the M1 Ultra can be ordered with up to 128GB of Universal Memory.

According to Apple’s benchmarks, the Mac Studio with M1 Max has up to 50% more CPU performance than a Mac Pro with a 16-core Xeon processor, as well as graphics performance that is more than three times faster than a Mac Pro with the company’s most popular graphics card. It’s up to 3.7 times faster than the 16-core Mac Pro at transcoding video. The M1 Ultra version boosts CPU performance by 90% over the same 16-core Xeon Mac Pro processor and graphics performance by up to 80% over the fastest available Mac graphics card. It’s up to 5.6 times faster than the 28-core Mac Pro at transcoding video.

Storage is also impressive, with a maximum capacity of 8TB and transfers of up to 7.4GB/s available. The device can support up to four Pro Display XDRs plus a 4K TV, for a total of nearly 90 million pixels driven by the device.

The Mac Studio costs $1,999 for M1 Max and $3,999 for M1 Ultra. Preorders begin on Tuesday, and it will be available on March 18.
