Let’s say you have a YouTube video and only want to share parts of it that start at 30 seconds. You can copy YouTube video links from a specific time using this tutorial. When the recipient clicks on the link, the video will begin playing at the time you specify, not at the beginning.
This tutorial will show you how to use the YouTube mobile app and computer to create shareable links of a YouTube video at a specific time.
Option One: On your computer, share a YouTube link from a specific time period
Using your Mac or PC, there are two ways to share YouTube video links from a specific location.
1) Open the YouTube video in any desktop web browser using the right-click feature
2) On the timeline, click the position you want to share from
3) Right-click the video and choose “Copy video URL at current time” from the context menu
4) In any way you want, share the link you copied to your clipboard (Example – Mail, message, etc.)
When your friend clicks on this link, it will start playing at the time you specified in step 2, not at the beginning of the video.
Option Two: Use the share button
1) Use a computer browser such as Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, or another to open the YouTube video
2) To share the video, go to the bottom of the page and click “Share”
3) Select “Start at” from the “Start at” drop-down menu, change the time to whatever you want, and hit the enter key
4) Select “Copy and Send This Link” from the drop-down menu
When someone clicks on this link, the YouTube video will begin playing at the time you specified.
Option Three: Share a link to a specific section of a YouTube video using a mobile phone. (Works with iPhone, iPad, or Android phones)
1) Open the YouTube video in Safari and tap “AA” to switch to desktop mode
2) Select “Request Desktop Website” from the drop-down menu
3) Now repeat the steps from step one. To put it another way, tap Share > check and set the “Start at” point > press the enter key > copy and share the link
The steps to requesting the desktop version of YouTube on your iPhone, iPad, or Android phone will be different if you use Chrome or another browser. Please use your browser’s help section to look for this option.
Option Four: Manually Insert Timestamp
1) Play the video in the YouTube app and tap “Share” to manually insert the timestamp
2) Select Copy link from the menu
3) Paste the copied link into iMessage, WhatsApp, Mail, or any other form of communication
4) Add?t=1m30s or?t=90s to the end of the URL
The timestamp is represented by?t= in this example. 0m30s denotes that the video will begin playing after 30 seconds (m30s) (s). You are free to use any format you want. If the video is longer than an hour, you can use the letter h to indicate that. For instance, https://youtu.be/rY0Y16s4wVE?t=30s indicates that the video will begin playing after 30 seconds.
Obviously, you can change the time to any number you want.
YouTube links (short vs. long)
Shorten YouTubeLinks
The video link is shortened and begins with https://youtu.be/rY0Y16s4wVE When it is copied from the APP, you can set the timestamp with?t=. Example: https://youtu.be/rY0Y16s4wVE?t=30s
Typical YouTube Links
The YouTube URL will begin with https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rY0Y16s4wVE if it isn’t shortened. Use &t= instead of?t= in this case. Substitute the ampersand symbol for the question mark (?). (&). For minutes and seconds, the rest of the rules are the same. Example – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rY0Y16s4wVE&t=30s
All of the links below lead to the same video, which will begin playing at the same time (that is, 30 seconds). The first two YouTube links are short, while the other two are long.
https://youtu.be/rY0Y16s4wVE?t=30s
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rY0Y16s4wVE If the video duration is longer than an hour, you can use h/m/s or convert time into seconds and display it
Now you have a complete idea of how to share video links on YouTube with a start time. If you come across any issues during the testing process, please let us know through the comments section.
