Apple released iOS 14.4 beta 1 a few hours back. And the release is for registered developers, but soon public beta testers will have access. It’s an over the air (OTA) update. If you are a developer, you should see the update in the settings section. As we know a couple of days back Apple released iOS 14.3 which came with quite a few changes and this beta release keeps developers busy with testing.
Though we focus on iOS 14.4 beta1 in this post, Apple also released beta versions for all below listed Operating Systems.
- iOS 14.4 developer beta 1, build number: 18D5030e
- iPadOS 14.4 developer beta 1, build number: 18D5030e
- tvOS 14.4 developer beta 1, build number: 18K5780c
- watchOS 7.3 developer beta 1, build number: 18S5780d
We will be mainly reviewing the features, performance updates, and bug fixes here. In case if you wonder how big the update is, it’s pretty big. If you are updating from previous iOS to 14.4 beta 1 the file size of the beta release would be around 4.5 gigabytes. Therefore, if you are not on a stable connection the update will test your patients.
If you are someone who is into details on the build number, then would wonder what does the last letter indicates 18D5030e. The letter “e” indicates that there will be quite a few beta releases for iOS 14.4.
iOS 14.4 beta 1 Features
- App Clips:
This is the Only key feature Apple talks about in the 14.4beta 1 release notes. According to Apple App Clips can now be experienced out of the code scanner. With the new release, you can experience the feature via NFC, Safari smart app banner, iMessage, or by using the camera app.
- Modem Firmware:
The new release of 14.4 beta1 comes with an update for the iPhone modem firmware. This change can be viewed under About Section > Modem Firmware. New updates show 1.41.00 in my iPhone 12. As you know the updated modem firmware will optimize signal strength to allow effective cellular communication. This overall supports to have a conversation with no distractions. - Privacy Section:
App Store now includes a separate section for each app that lets you see the privacy settings. Such as “data used to track you” and “data linked to you”. If you are someone who has privacy concerns this feature update could come in handy.
Bugs on iOS 14.4 beta 1
- Wrong color display for connected accessories:
It is not always but the 14.4beta1 sometimes displays the wrong color for the connected AirPods. It only happens once out of ten times, and it’s not a major issue, at least for me. - Green tint bug:
Green tint but or some may call it yellow tint bug which some iPhone 12 users experience, it still not fixed. It is not a new bug for 14.4 beta 1 however since it not yet fixed, I thought of listing it out. - Bug Fixes
- Text Message Notification Bug: Fixed
Performance of iOS 14.4 beta 1
The performance between the new beta update and the past version doesn’t seem to have any major improvements. However, as we experience the previous iOS version was fairly responsive and didn’t eat up the battery.
If you need numbers, the Geekbench scores on my iPhone 12 showed up 1576 on Songle-Core and 3711 on the multi-Core which is also verymuch similar to the iOS 13 results.
Next Release
We can expect the final release of iOS 14.4 after few beta releases. And for now we expect to have it in Mid February, 2020.
Finally if you realise 14.4 beta 1 update is not for you, there are ways of downgrading to previous virtion. But, this may need a computer. I am sure you can find a walkthrough that guides step by stem on this process. Which we dont consider doing as I believe if you go though this post you will know for sure whether the beta 1 is for you or not before downloading 4.5GB update and testing on your iDevice.
Since we are all new to the 14.4 beta 1 developer release, there can be unidentified bugs or minor features hiding behind. So, if you come across anything new, please do share with us using the comments section below. Also, we would love to hear more about performance and battery life.
